SMU Alumni chapters foster the connection between SMU and alumni communities outside of Dallas though meaningful programming.  Chapters are divided in to three different groups based on the size of the population of alumni, parents, and friends. Red chapters can be found in Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.  Over 20 Blue chapters have been established by dedicated alumni leaders nationwide while International chapters bring the Hilltop to many different cities around the world! 


Chapter programming is different in each city which means that volunteer opportunities can vary.  Here are ways to get plugged in to your local chapter:

  • Fill out our interest form so we can follow up with you regularly to keep you informed and connected.
  • Update your contact information in the SMU Alumni Directory to ensure that you receive invitations to chapter events in your area.
  • Attend your local Chapter events! For a listing of upcoming activities visit our online Events Calendar.
  • If there is not a chapter in your area consider starting one.
  • Get to know your chapter leadership team:
    • Chapter leaders serve a two year term and are selected by the Regional Committee of the Alumni Board
    • Red chapter leaders are expected to plan and execute 4 events a year and serve as ambassadors in their regions
    • Blue chapter leaders are expected to plan and execute 2 events a year and serve as ambassadors in their regions
    • International chapter leaders are expected to plan events as they see fit and serve as ambassadors in the region

Time Commitment

Time commitments vary according to chapter group.  Plan to spend more time around events and less time in between events!
