The LEC 's Academic Counselors spend approximately one-half of their time in one-to-one sessions with first-year and academically at-risk student athletes. The frequency of these sessions is determined by the individual student athlete's history and academic performance. During summer sessions, these meetings may occur as often as four times a week. At each session, the student athlete self-reports academic progress, and the student and the counselor discuss effective strategies for the week ahead.
Weekly meetings between the student athlete and academic counselor include sharing grade information for each class. This allows the counselor to better assist the student in planning how to prepare for upcoming exams and papers. It also encourages more effective work with tutors. Counselors regularly share this information with coaches. Three or four times a semester, the academic counselors send grade feedback reports to professors who have student athletes in their classes, asking them to report current grades and attendance. There is also room for professors to comment on student behavior and suggest ways to improve, such as working with a tutor or seeing the instructor during office hours. The counselors share this information in their weekly meetings with student athletes, and they forward each team's feedback report to coaches.
A feedback report looks like this:
| Date | Group Name | Name | Subject | Catalog | Attendance (Sat, Not Sat) | Grade | Commments |
| 2/27/08 | Rowing | Smith, Joan | EMIS | 1307 | Sat | C | Student should attend weekly help session with professor WED 4 6 |
| 3/25/08 | Rowing | Smith, Joan | EMIS | 1307 | Sat | B+ | Attends help sessions every week. |
| 4/17/08 | Rowing | Smith, Joan | EMIS | 1307 | Sat | A | Grades improving. |
| 3.24.08 | Rowing | Smith, Joan | ENGL | 1302 | Sat | B | C or better |
| 4/21/08 | Rowing | Smith, Joan | ENGL | 1302 | Unsat | C | Missed 5 classes with no notice. |
The feedback report allows counselors to see how students progress over the semester. It also supplies helpful comments, such as "should attend weekly help sessions".
The LEC conducts academic skill-building workshops throughout the semester. Topics include managing time, taking tests, reading texts effectively, taking and using notes, improving concentration and memory, and preparing for finals. If workshop times conflict with a student athlete's schedule, the information can be shared in a one-to-one setting with either a SAAS academic counselor or an LEC learning specialist.
