Transfer Admission
SMU’s Office of Undergraduate
Admission separates transfer students into two categories,
transfer and first-year transfer, based on the number of
transferrable hours completed at time of application.
Transfer Applicants (Students with 30 or more transferable hours).
-
Applicants with a 2.70
transferable GPA or better are often successful in gaining
admission.
-
Applicants must be “Math
Ready” which means completion of College Algebra or a higher
level math at the college level or completion of Algebra I,
Geometry and Algebra II in high school if graduation was less
than 3 years ago.
-
The rigor of the college
courses taken as well as the readiness for the intended major
are evaluated in the admission process. We recommend taking all
or some of the
prerequisite courses for your intended major before
transferring to SMU.
-
If two years of a foreign language in high school or one year of
a foreign language in college have not been completed, students
will be required to take two semesters of a foreign language at
SMU.
First-Year Transfer Applicants (Students with less than 30
transferable hours)
-
In addition to
evaluating the college coursework and transferable GPA, the
Admission Committee will review the student’s high school
curriculum, GPA and standardized test scores. If five years
have passed since your high school graduation, we recommend
accumulating 30 or more transferable hours before transferring.

For all transfer applicants we
recommend taking a course in English Composition, a lab science, a
math course beyond College Algebra and a course pertaining to the
intended major before transferring.
Performing arts auditions
All transfer students who intend to major in the performing arts
of dance, music, or theatre will have a two-fold admission
process. They will be considered on academic standards as well as
audition results. Click on Meadows School
of the Arts for more information. Dance and theatre majors are admissible
only in the fall term.
Academic forgiveness
SMUs academic forgiveness policy permits a student
to have academic work taken 10 or more years prior to the term of
admission forgiven and not included in the transferable GPA or hours earned.
Please go to Forms & Applications tab at the top of the page to find
academic forgiveness application.
