Dallas: the global gateway
Dallas is a gateway to the global community, and SMU takes full
advantage of this dynamic setting to broaden opportunities for student
success.
SMU’s undergraduate curriculum includes a new major
in international studies, along with area studies specializing
in Asia, Latin America, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. The
Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures offers majors
and/or minors in languages ranging from Spanish and Chinese to
Russian area studies.
Approximately 400 SMU students participate each year in SMUs
22 international study programs throughout Europe and in Mexico,
Japan, China, Australia, Southeast Asia, and Taiwan.
SMU has a sister-school relationship with Kwansei Gakuin
University in Nishinomiya, Japan, where SMU students live
with Japanese families.
SMU has an exchange program with Soochow University
in Taipei, Taiwan, offering a term or an entire academic year of
study, along with other programs in Asia.
• The SMU student body includes more than 800 international
students from nearly 100 countries, and efforts are under way
to increase student recruitment in areas such as Latin America.
The Richter University Honors Scholars program funds
international or multicultural student research projects
outside the United States each summer.
Dedman College students are eligible for specialized
internship programs such as the Jack C. and Annette K. Vaughn
Foreign Service and International Affairs Internship.
The John Goodwin Tower Center for Political Studies
in Dedman College supports teaching and research programs with an
emphasis on global studies and national security policy.
The
Willis M. Tate Distinguished Lecture Series brings national
and world leaders to SMU for discussion and debate. Speakers
have included Rudy Guiliani of New York City, Desmond Tutu and F. W. de Klerk
of South Africa, Mikhail Gorbachev of Russia, Oscar Arias of
Costa Rica, and Lech Walesa of Poland.
The SMU Hart Global Leaders Forum enables SMU and
selected local high school students to learn from world figures
such as former President Gerald R. Ford and former Secretary
of State Madeleine Albright.
The presence of outstanding graduate programs enriches
the campus experience and strengthens SMU’s global network. For
instance:
– The M.B.A. American Airlines Global Leadership Program
of the Cox School of Business provides full-time M.B.A. students
with a three-week study program abroad.
– SMU’s Dedman School of Law has been a leader in international
law since the 1950s, educating lawyers from more than 60 nations.
The school also publishes two international law journals.
– SMU’s Perkins School of Theology offers satellite programs in
Houston/Galveston, San Antonio, and Oklahoma, as well as a Hispanic
Studies Program for preparation for ministry in a bicultural or
bilingual setting. Perkins also has cooperative programs
with Latin American seminaries.
SMU’s faculty includes many scholars with international
reputations in areas ranging from anthropology to piano performance.
SMU is a global destination for scholars and aficionados of art. The Meadows Museum houses
one of the world’s most
comprehensive collections of Spanish art outside Spain. A new facility for
the collection opened in 2001 with a visit from King Juan
Carlos I and Queen Sofía of Spain.
To expand its global perspectives, the Board of Trustees
now includes two international trustees, one from Hong Kong
and another from Mexico City.
