We tapped the experts
SMU faculty members do more than teach – they've been known to
transform lives as they inform, inquire, and challenge. They
are accessible not only to students through small classes that
encourage faculty-student interaction, but also outside the
classroom for advising or mentoring.
Our professors get high marks for the balance of achievement they
bring to the academic enterprise as outstanding teachers,
noted researchers bringing new perspectives to their teaching,
and as University citizens active in the campus community.
Almost eighty-five percent of the faculty hold the doctorate degree
or highest degree in their fields. Faculty with international
and national reputations teach undergraduates, so the scholar
breaking new ground in his or her field will be the same person
leading your classroom discussions. Professors in the sciences and
engineering, for example, hold patents on innovations making an
impact on health care and technology. Others are leading advancements
in the humanities, arts, business, and communications. Many
faculty provide opportunities for undergraduates to conduct research
with them one-on-one, and some students have presented their
findings at national conferences.
SMU supports outstanding teaching through its Center for Teaching
Excellence and its new Academy of Distinguished Teachers,
which recognizes the best of the best. All in all, the faculty comprises
a community of scholars who invite students into an exciting
partnership for learning and care about them as individuals.
It's what we mean when we talk about the "education of your
life" and the "life of your education."
