SMU rising in the rankings

Those who rate universities ranked SMU among the top institutions in the country during 2010.

DALLAS (SMU) — Those in the business of rating universities ranked SMU among the top institutions in the country during 2010.

U.S. News and World Report gave the University its highest ranking ever, placing SMU 56th among 260 institutions – up from 68th in 2010, and 73rd in 2004. Only two universities in Texas ranked ahead of SMU — Rice at 17th, and the University of Texas-Austin, at 45th. For more information, visit www.usnews.com/colleges.

SMU’s Cox School of Business full-time MBA program was ranked 12th among business schools in the United States by Bloomberg Businessweek, up from 18th in the publication’s previous ranking. Learn more at www.businessweek.com/bschools.

The University, SMU’s Cox School of Business and Meadows School of the Arts made Parade magazine’s “A” list for “outstanding schools that often fly under the radar.”  The ranking is based on a survey of high school counselors. And in a ranking of graduate programs in theology and religion, SMU’s Ph.D. program in religious studies was ranked ninth based on factors including quality of faculty. The graduate program in religious studies is offered jointly through Perkins School of Theology and the Department of Religious Studies in Dedman College.

In Athletics, SMU was named the best overall Conference USA collegiate athletics program in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Division I standings.

Meanwhile, the founding of Southern Methodist University in 1911 was ranked as one of the most significant events in the history of Dallas, according to a committee of scholars and experts assembled by The Dallas Morning News as part of the celebration of the 125th anniversary of its founding.
